We hitchhiked from Riga down to the Hill Of Crosses in Lithuania, so we were on an awkward time frame, outside of the tourist busses which allowed us to experience it with what I would imagine is far less than the normal amount of tourism. It is easy to get to as it sits about 12kms north of a small town called Šiauliai and only a short walk, roughly 10-15 minute from the road once you are close.
No one is really sure of the origin of the practise of leaving crosses, nor is anyone sure exactly how many crosses there are but it is estimated to be over 100,000. It’s a pretty magical site that kind of just appears out of no where in the middle of a field and I have never seen anything like it anywhere else in the world.
