The Incredibly Beautiful Salto del Agua in San Luis Potosi.

Salto Del Agua

Salto del Agua in the Husteca region of San Louis Potosi was an incredibly beautiful and unique waterfall with a series of pools filled with amazing turquoise-emerald colored water.

During the rainy season, the waterfall flows fairly heavily but the flow is often broken off due to a hydroelectric power station diverting the water. Never the less even without the falls flowing it is still a spectacular scene.

We actually arrived late afternoon just as the sun was setting and the waterfall was flowing, we didn’t take any photos because we just assumed it would be the same the following day, but when we arrived the next morning there was nothing, which really surprised us until we found out about the power plant. So basically if you see the water flowing take photos straight away haha.

According to the limited amount of information we could find online, Salto del Agua is 70 meters high although I was a little dubious of this, either way, it was still a large waterfall.

Getting to Salto del Agua, San Louis Potosi

Getting to Salto Del Agua is not the easiest, not that it’s hard it’s just a bit of a drive, and you will probably need your own car or find yourself a driver for the day in Ciudad Valles or El Naranjo.

Getting to Salto Del Agua with your own car is pretty straight forward. Assuming you’re in San Lusi Potosi for multiple reasons including some of these, Puente de Dios. Then you will for sure make your way to Ciudad Valles which is the closest large town to places like Las Pozas and Puente de Dios. Once in Ciudad Valles you need to make your way north out of the city onto the 85 then continue heading north for about 65kms until you arrive at Antiguo Morelos. You will turn left there onto the 80. You follow the 80 for 32kms until you arrive in El Naranjo.

If you plan on making this a day trip from Ciudad Valles then there is no real reason to go into El Naranjo. So ignore that part and after you leave Antiguo Morelos you want to drive for 30kms then turn onto the road 18 de Marzo and drive to Colonia el Meco.

When you arrive in town there should be a left turn off the main road called Miguel Hidalgo. There was a sign saying Salto Del Meco that we followed which was another amazing series of waterfalls. Stop here but when you’re done keep driving down that road and stay left until you arrive at the hydroelectric plant. Once you reach here turn left onto a small dirt road and then take the first turn to the right. This will take you into the car park and from there it’s about a 10-meter walk to the falls.

This sounds kind of annoying but you should at least be able to find El Naranjo or Salto del Meco on google maps and it is deffs worth it if you’re willing to put in the effort.

This is an aerial shot of El Meco.

Where to stay in Ciudad Valles.

So we are always going to recommend eco-hostels or lodges first and this one is another beautiful one located in central Ciudad Valles.
Eco Hotel Casa Kima is a beautiful little tropical styled hotel with bamboo buildings complete with grass thatched roofs that are reasonably priced.

Hotel Casa Ortiz is a very well priced 5-star hotel in the middle of Ciudad Valles. It comes complete with a pool and breakfast. We didn’t actually stay here but it is very highly rated and probably a great option if you’re looking for something a little more conventional.

If you are looking for a more budget option the Hotel Casa Clavel is probably perfect. It is what you would expect from a budget hotel, basic and clean. Rooms at Hostel Casa Clavel start from around $25 USD per night

Where to stay in El Naranjo.

Your other choice, if you want to stay a short skip from Salto Del Subi, is to stay in El Naranjo. I can imagine it is super easy to organize a taxi or collectivo if there are more than four of you from here for a very reasonable price.

Bel-Há ecoparque is a beautiful little eco-resort that almost has its own private river. The rooms are basic but clean. Bel-Ha also offers tours to all the major water features in the area so if you wanted to do everything at once in a nice clean package then this is a great place to go. It is actually about 15kms outside of El Naranjo but it is kind of an all-inclusive sort of place.

Other waterfalls in San Luis Potosi

So there are probably dozens and dozens of other amazing spots in San Lusi Potosi but here are a few worth checking out.

Puente De Dios an incredibly beautiful spot tucked into the mountains.

Salto del Agua another amazing spot that seems to remain extremely uncrowded most of the year.

Final thoughts

Salto del Agua coupled with Salto del Meco makes for a pretty beautiful little day trip. The water
in these parts is an incredible color all the way through the rivers.

If you are feeling like starting early and having a big day you could for sure fit in Cascada Minas Viejas which you can also read about by clicking the link

Being sustainable while traveling.

Mexico is an extremely beautiful place and between the beaches, the coral reefs, and all of the waterfalls there are a few small things we can do to help keep them pristine.

My first tip for this especially for the cenotes, and coral reefs or any delicate ecosystem really is to use a sunscreen specifically designed not to damage the reefs or impact marine life in any way.

Not only that most of them are better for your skin as well as the environment.

There are more and more options becoming available when it comes to this but here are a few of our favorites.

Kiss My Face is one brand that is making a really nice mineral face and body cream. They are also cruelty-free so you can feel good about that, and it contains beeswax, green tea, sunflower oil, and sage.

Sun Bum is a super fun company that has a large range of reef friendly mineral products. Ingredients include mineral zinc oxide, coconut oil, and cocoa seed butter.

All Good Sunscreen Butter is one we have not actually tried but have been hearing a lot of good things about online. All good use zinc oxide mineral ingredient to protect your skin, as well as coconut oil, beeswax, and vitamin E oil.

Bug spray is something else you should be conscious of using before going in the water. If you’re just on your way to the beach or a waterfall you don’t need to drown yourself in bug spray before jumping in. A lot of the chemicals can be toxic and help do damage to the ecosystems.
