Three Days in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Three Days in Sofia.

The first time I went to Sofia I had no idea what to expect but I felt like most of Eastern Europe is like that. Every country in this region is so vastly different and with out research (which I didn’t do) you can never have any idea what you’re going to come across. For example I never expected to see donkeys pulling carts through the centre of Tirana in Albania or the giant walls surrounding the ancient city of Dubrovnik. It is just a constant of unknown. The history of this region has created such an incredible amount of diversity that it was at times hard to comprehend.

So when I arrived in Sofia it was not really a surprise to see such an eclectic mix of beautiful architecture amongst completely dilapidated streets. It is a strange cross over of European and Communist architecture. You will be walking through these streets that feel like run down back streets and you will just stumble upon some amazing building or fountain or area of town that you would never expect to be there.

If you’re thinking about doing the Seven Rila Lakes Hike you can check it out here.

Things to see in Sofia.

The main thing for me there was the architecture, mostly St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sveti Sedmochislenitsi Church and St. Nicholas the Miracle-Maker. But even just walking the streets and coming across things I will never know the names of would have been enough for me. But like I said I had not done any research and I just stumbled across these places one afternoon when I was going to drop some film off at a local lab. It was my last afternoon there and I did not get as much time to explore as I would have liked.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the largest orthodox churches in the world and so wild! If I was to return it would be my first stop for sure. Outside of that there was the also the two formally mentioned that would be the next few things to follow that with.

I kind of like trains and if that is your thing you can go to the main train station and they are running these crazy old run down looking models that you would probably hesitate to get on back home but here they fit in so perfectly!

I feel like I didn’t explore Sofia to its full potential and probably need to go back but for now it will have to wait I suppose.
